I didn’t want carpet because of the dust and mold.  My home is also a passive solar design, so I have painted concrete and the main floor is tile. It’s really nice having warm floors. Greg C., homeowner and contractor: I have radiant floor heat. I love the comfort. We run around in shorts and tee-shirts all winter with the thermostat set at about 68°. Our home is about 4,000 sq ft with cathedral ceilings and 3,300 sq ft of tiles. In the ‘93 blizzard we were without power for 3 days, but the house temperature didn’t drop below 58°. We were quite comfortable. The service from Shelter Technology has been excellent. Bill’s design and how he worked with us was excellent. He really knows his stuff. During the system setup, he was always very responsive. He wanted to get the system running at peak performance. Once you have a system like this you’ll never go back to a conventional forced air system!

He put an extra radiator in the bathroom for extra heat. He put it  just under the towel rack. It’s great! Warm towels! And now the cats don’t get on the furniture. They go to the floor. They love it too!

Now we also have baseboard radiant heat and a small boiler.  We are absolutely satisfied with the products. As a technician, as a planner, and as a systems engineer, I don’t believe Bill has a peer. He is very hands-on, and he is personable as well. I cannot recommend him too highly. He can do the routine, but he excels when the task needs creativity, technology, and personal interest. Linda J., homeowner: Having been raised in Florida, I like to be warm. I like the radiators because they produce instant heat. With individual radiators in each room I have maximum control over the space. I can get up next to them to take a chill off; they aren’t too hot.  If my young children happen to stand too close, they won’t get a burn. And yet they heat the room very efficiently. They not only distribute heat evenly, but they are also very attractive. I really enjoy this heating system. What I like about the in-floor heat is that there aren’t any radiators taking up wall space. Once the slab heats up, the heat is evenly distributed -- no cold spots. The kids don’t wear slippers in the winter, no matter how I try. It is a comfort knowing that their feet aren’t getting chilled. If I were to do it again, I’d get radiators everywhere. We have glue-down hardwood floors, linoleum and carpeting. We ran out of money before we could finish the flooring so we lived on the concrete floors for a while. The flooring has cut down on the intensity of the heat. It’s still o.k. but I really liked it better before the flooring was down. The service is very good. If there is a problem, Bill gets out here very quickly.

Doug L., homeowner:  The Myson wall heat exchanger has been disappointing, but the floor system has been very good. We’ve had the system for 5 years. The comfort is unparalleled: no air blowing around, no ugly registers, no huge propane bill. So we’re happy. Bill has been very responsive to our needs.

Toone L., homeowner:  We love our heating system. We wouldn’t have anything else. We’re tickled. It’s so comfortable. We don’t think about turning it on or off. You’re always comfortable. Our little girl is not prone to wear clothes. It’s wonderful because she could run around with just a diaper on in the winter. You don’t think about keeping her warm. We all stay quite healthy. We have tile floors. It’s wonderful to have warm tile floors. It’s the epitome!  We were just talking about building again, something smaller. But we agreed that the one thing we wouldn’t give up is the heat. The service has been excellent. It couldn’t be better.

Chris L., architect: Once folks move into their new homes, the heating system just seems to disappear. The house is always warm and comfortable like on a spring day. They don’t notice it because it’s not drafty or noisy. With radiant heat, usually clients already know about it. They come in and ask for it. No sales required. Working with Bill has been very good. He’s always been available when I have questions. It’s nice because when I’m doing the drawings I often need reliable technical information. Sometimes I get hung up on one section because I can’t get a response. With Bill, I get information that I have confidence in because he has first-hand knowledge. He knows the systems from the engineering and design end as well as the installation end. He’s involved with the system thoroughly. It’s nice to know that at Shelter Technology it’s all one system from beginning to end, and not just mailorder parts, where you don’t know if it will hold up for 30 years.

David M., homeowner:  The units installed work very satisfactorily. In fact they work better than those that are heavily promoted by the ‘experts.’ It’s a unique system, due to Bill’s engineering. We’re doing things that the conventional ‘experts’ say can’t be done. When Bill puts something together, it’s done right. There are few people who do things as cleanly and as correctly as Bill. I have no reservation whatsoever in recommending Shelter Technology and Bill Fleming.

Blanche P., homeowner:  When Scott started talking about radiant heat floors, I was skeptical. I told him it had better be warm. We have a great room with vaulted ceilings. I thought it couldn’t possibly work. But we couldn’t be more pleased. It keeps us toasty warm. I used to have cold feet, but not any more. I just love my floors!

Scott P., homeowner and contractor:  Until about 10 years ago I was ignorant about this type of technology. In the last 5 or 6 years I started hearing about it. Then I met a fellow who had radiant floor heat. I visited him in the winter and was impressed with how comfortable it was. My wife and I realized how miserable we were in the winter; our feet were cold and our noses were stuffy. But not any more. As both a homeowner and contractor, I can say that this is one of the most efficient and comfortable systems available. And the Heatmaker with the on-demand hot water is a real plus. Though we don’t have any hard evidence, we feel that we have the very best environment for our asthmatic child. It’s just much more serene without the moving air. From what we know, we have good reason to believe that it helps her. Working with Bill has been a great experience. He’s a real expert from the ground up about this technology. He knows his craft and his business. He’s a brilliant and very caring guy. You don’t find many like him. The service in installing the system was excellent. We haven’t had any problems so I can only talk about the installation. But I do think that Shelter Technology is at the top level in terms of getting you what you want. They really listen to your needs and help you get it. There’s not a bunch of ego.  They take the utmost responsibility in caring for the client and making sure the system runs properly. They make sure it’s right!

Jackie S., architect and homeowner:  I really like my radiators.. I have them on the sleeping level. I’m the kind of person who likes it cool in the bedroom and generally sleep with the window open. I was concerned that the thermostat would be always coming on and we would be heating the great outdoors. But we can turn down each radiator at night. Then in the morning when we turn them on, they immediately heat up. I didn’t really think those small radiators could possibly heat a whole room, but they do! They work great!
